Beyond the Headlines: BPA Found in Most Canned Foods Nationwide: Why This Is A Big Deal & How To (Really) Stop Exposing Your Family to BPA

BPA is in the news again.  That infamous chemical, bisphenol A, has been found in over 67% of nearly 200 food cans, according to a new report published this week.  Basically, if you and your family buy canned food you are probably ingesting BPA, since some of the world's largest producers of canned foods were found to use BPA in their can linings.

Fish: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (especially for pregnant moms and little kids!)

Our homemade sushi is a weekly request from my munchkins!

We are a fish loving family.

When we are celebrating a special occasion, my 6 year old requests sushi. We all (including our 2 year old) eat fresh raw salmon sushi or ceviche or poke bowls once a week and, additionally, we eat cooked fish a second time a week. My oldest also loves taking sardines to school (I swear!) and if we go out on the weekends to a family lunch it is not strange for him to order octopus if it is on the menu.

We love fish. The key, however, is eating the right kind of fish (more on that a bit later).

Image from : Martha Stewart Online

Easter is coming up and we just started Spring Break.... so what do I have planned for next 2 week?

Among, many many activities will be our annual Easter egg dyeing afternoon. My boys love dyeing and decorating their Easter eggs and this year I have decided to give natural food dyes a chance.

Your Worse Nightmare: Super Lice. How To Not Get It & How to Combat It If You Do - WITHOUT Toxic Chemicals

6 times.   I know a family in my son's school who has had to deal with lice 6 times this year!   Holy #$@!  I mean, I am not one to swear on my blog but, really?  6 times??  Just thinking about it makes my scalp itch.

Lice might just be every mother's (and teachers?)  worse nightmare.  We have not had to deal with it in our house (knock on wood.... hope I don't hoax it) but with 6 separate episodes in another Kindergarten class  at my son's school it seems like those little critters are always close by. Various mothers, teachers and nanny's have asked me for chemical free alternatives, so today that is exactly what we are going to talk about:  non-toxic lice treatments - that work!

Congratulations Your Pregnant! Now what? Non-Toxic Munchkin's Guide to a Non-Toxic and Healthy Pregnancy.

Congratulations Your Pregnant!  Now what?
A Non-Toxic Munchkin's Guide to a Non-Toxic and Healthy Pregnancy.

I think most mothers, if not all, understand  that pregnancy is a time to be healthy.  Many of us become preoccupied with researching all things organic in what can seem like a sometimes overwhelming push to become healthier as moms to -ultimately- offer a healthier beginning for our babies.

Is this non-toxic living thing a hormone induced exaggeration?   Is it a passing trend?  Nope.

More and more studies are showing links between exposure to certain common chemicals during pregnancy to everything from preterm births and higher cancer risk later in life to  birth defects and childhood behavioral problems. In fact, pregnancy is one of 4 'windows of susceptibility' these are periods in our lives when we are especially vulnerable to the toxic effects of chemicals (the other periods are fetal development, early childhood, adolescence)
