Pregnancy and the Zika Virus

Most of us have heard something about the ZIKA virus. As the virus makes it way slowly into the US from Latin America (health officials say it is a matter of 'when' not 'if'), we will all be hearing a whole lot more about this disease... especially now that the World Health Organization suspects it could become " a bigger threat to global health than the Ebola epidemic".

The community that really needs to be alert and concerned are women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant in the coming months.

WHAT IS THE ZIKA VIRUS?

Tip 09: 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living in 2016

Welcome to tip 9 of our 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living in 2016!

Last time, with Tip 08, we explained why making your own cleaning products is not only ridiculously easy, but is the best way to make sure you don't expose your family to a long list of harmful chemicals commonly found in unregulated cleaning products (no cleaning product is regulated or tested for safety by anyone)

  TIP 9:
AVOID buing wrinkle resistant bed sheets and clothing

Day 08: 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living in 2016

Welcome to day 8 of our 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living in 2016!

Yesterday , on Day 07, we explained how the chemical that has been hailed "the most toxic plastic for children" is oftentimes hidden underneath you and your children's bedsheets in the mattress protectors- and how to make a one time switch to a safer 100% non- toxic material

1. Pour distilled vinegar into an empty spray bottle until the halfway point
2.  Add water until spray bottle is filled
3.  voila! You just made a basic, germ fighting, multi surface cleaner

 TIP 8:  Thursday, January 14, 2016:
STOP buying toxic cleaning products for your home. Try -just once- to make your own.  I promise once you do you will never go back to buying multi surface cleaners full of dubious chemicals

Day 07: 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living in 2016

Welcome to day 7 of our 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living in 2016!

Yesterday , on Day 06, we explained why you should switch to safer materials in the kitchen and throw out (or recycle!) all things plastic and consider embracing glass as a safer non-toxic alternative.

 TIP 7:  Wednesday, January 13, 2016:
Take a good look under your child's bedsheets and switch out anything that contains vinyl

What’s on your child’s bed? More specifically what is laying between your child and your child's mattress?   Many mattress protectors (for cribs as well as larger sized beds) are made with vinyl/PVC.  Why?  Well, the truth is that this chemical does a great job at protecting mattresses and pillows from water and protecting you from dust mites and mildew.

However, PVC has a very dark side.  According to Healthy Child Healthy World, PVC is”the most toxic plastic for children’s health" since the “Chemicals released by the PVC life cycle have been linked to chronic diseases on the rise such as cancer, asthma, learning and developmental disabilities, obesity, and even reproductive disorders. PVC uses and releases a toxic cocktail of chemicals including the Agent Orange chemical dioxin, phthalates, vinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, mercury, lead, cadmium, and organotins. Phthalates, which are added to make PVC soft and flexible, are released from these PVC products and pose avoidable public health risks…. A number of chemicals released by the PVC life cycle have been linked with or have been shown to cause learning and developmental disabilities

Day 06: 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living in 2016

Welcome to day 6 of our 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living in 2016!

Yesterday , on Day 05, we explained how not using antimicrobial products and instead washing you and your kid's hands with plain (not antibacterial soap or gels) soap and water, is the safest, healthiest and most efficient way to ward off germs.

 TIP 6:  Tuesday, January 12, 2016:
Embrace glass

Look around your kitchen - do you see a lot of plastic?  Baby bottles? Cups?  Plates?  food storage containers? plastic wrap/saran wrap?

Don’t get me wrong, there is a time and place when plastics can be used and probably should be used -  but this should not be every single day, especially not in your kitchen.

Day 03: 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living

Welcome to day 3 of our 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living in 2016!

Yesterday, Day 02, we explained the importance of opening your windows every single day (regardless of weather!) allows toxins stuck indoors to circulate and exit your home.

Today, we have another super easy to follow tip that can dramatically reduce the chemicals you and your family are exposed to on a daily basis:

 TIP 3:  Wednesday, January 6, 2016:
Rethink you and your lil' munchkins moisturizer

I know, we are in the middle of winter and most of us need some serious moisturizing, as do our kiddos.

Our entire body can benefit from moisturizing - which means that if you are using a fruity smelling conventional moisturizer you could be, literally, massaging numerous potentially harmful chemicals onto your body’s largest organ.

Day 2: 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living

Welcome to day 2 of our 10 Days of Non-Toxic Living in 2016!

Yesterday, Day 01, we explained how that new clothing you bought or were gifted over the holidays can expose you and your family to numerous chemicals and why it is so important to wash your new clothes before wearing them.  Today, we have another super easy to follow tip that can dramatically reduce the chemicals you and your family are exposed to on a daily basis:

 TIP 2:  Tuesday, January 5, 2016:
Open your windows! Daily.

Why?   The air inside most homes, schools and office buildings is actually more contaminated with chemicals than the air outside.   Seriously (unless you live in certain cities in India which have the worse air pollution in the world).  Chemicals from cleaning products, air fresheners, flame retardants in furniture, lead in paint or toys, VOC's from paint or furniture and various other chemicals from commonly used products migrate into our house's air and dust, making a tightly sealed house a pretty toxic one.   Opening the windows in your house allows fresh air to enter your house and circulate.  Fresh air is always good!
